How to Come Prepared for Your Hair Service

Writer: Gina BedowGina Bedow

Coming prepared for your hair service can vary from stylist to stylist but over the years I’ve pinpointed some of the most important and helpful things for both myself and my client to have the best experience possible.

  • Appointment Inquiry

-Being prepared for a service begins from the initial inquiry. When a client reaches out to me(particularly a new client) it’s so important to be upfront with as much Information as possible. That means your first and last name, what service you're looking to get done, when you’re looking to come in(be as specific as possible), and if necessary some inspiration pictures. For color services, it is super helpful to know your hair history. As stylists we're never looking to judge someone for what they have done to their hair, we just need to know everything so that we are prepared for your service. That box color that got you through the lockdown? Again, no judgment but it's still in your hair and can affect what we are able to do (I’ll get into why stylists caution at home color in a future post). Another thing that I always ask to see is a current photo of your hair in natural daylight. This is so I can see what your hair looks most true to tone.

Current clients, if you’re looking to do a big change please let me know in advance. Some changes might be a completely different service and require different timing.

  • Before You Arrive and Appointment Day

-Please come with clean, DRY hair. For a color service, too much product buildup can inhibit the process and make it hard to comb through your hair. It’s also helpful to see how you wear your hair on a daily basis.

-What should I wear to my appointment? Ideally something you don’t care much about. Nothing fancy or delicate for the service. Listen, I try my absolute best to keep your clothes clean and dry but I’m human. An old t-shirt is a great option. Full disclosure, I like to take a lot of photos and videos for social media so feel free to bring something to change into post service. Which brings me to my next point…

-How you can come prepared for photos/videos? You can always bring another top or outfit that makes you feel confident and shows off your personality.

PLEASE NO TURTLENECKS, HOODIES, OR LARGE COLLARS.

Not sure what color might be best? I love for my clients to have free reign, but if you’re feeling lost a white or black top is always good. For hair color, a white top is great for dark hair, and a black top is great for lighter hair. Jewelry is great to accentuate your features. If you’re someone who wears makeup, it might be a good idea to bring a little with for a quick touch up after your service.

*Also, if you’re not interested in having your hair photographed, that is totally fine!

-Plan for your time in the chair. If you’re unsure of how long a service will take, please ask. It’s never a good experience for anyone if we are short on time and rushing.

If you’re coming in for a longer service, feel free to bring something you can do while sitting in the chair(ie a laptop, headphones, a book, your phone, crochet, color, etc). A snack is always a good idea as well.

-Please do your best to arrive at the time of your appointment. I totally understand that sometimes things happen, we’re human. A text is always appreciated. If you arrive early, you are welcome to wait up front and text me letting me know. I do my best to streamline my appointments and generally am unable to take clients early. If I can accommodate you I will definitely let you know! Arriving with time to begin the service at the appointment time is always best.

I hope you found this to be helpful and informative! If you are ever unsure or have questions, please feel free to reach out, 630-853-1046. Keep your eyes peeled for the next post, "Hair Color Crash Course". Coming soon!
